Mission

The Writing Center's mission includes both student writers and our staff of interns.

In working with students, the Writing Center promotes the awareness and the strategies necessary for writers to successfully engage the writing and revision process. Because writers' needs are highly individual, the Writing Center favors one-to-one or small group conferences either in person or online. We foster learning and thinking by focusing on issues of meaning in drafts and by involving writers in reflection on their work. Building collaborative, peer relationships means we don't provide answers; rather, we equip writers with confidence and strategies to engage in the writing process.

In addition to enhancing the skills of the writers we work with, the Writing Center also serves as a center of enrichment for its student staff. While we pursue the same goals amongst ourselves as we do with all writers, we also encourage writing assistants to develop a critical pedagogy by demanding a growing and reflective practice. To foster such a pedagogy, the Writing Center promotes continuing scholarship, researching pedagogical innovations, and exchanging them with the wider writing center community and beyond.
