Faculty Support

Downloadable Faculty Support Brochure

The Writing Center is proud to make a number of services available to faculty at Western. Resources we provide include the following.

Writing Center Information

To facilitate promoting the Writing Center to students, we will happily provide information for your course materials. Available resources include a syllabus blurb describing our services and brochures detailing our resources and hours of operation.

Demonstrations

By using role-play, our classroom demonstrations familiarize students with the resources we provide and demystify the writing conference experience. Demonstrations are available in either a basic 10-minute format or an extended 20-minute format that includes a tour of the Writing Center. Demonstrations should be scheduled during the first or last minutes of class.

Group Conferences

Attached right to your curriculum, group conferences offer whole classes opportunities to receive writing support. We offer several models for group work, but our favorite involves our staff facilitating reader response amongst five or six students at a time.

Workshops

Writing Center workshops are designed to help faculty support student writing in content courses. All workshops are 50 minutes long and topics include the following:

  • Developing Ideas - Writers choose a topic and brainstorm ideas.
  • Revising for Clarity and Order - Writers use the "scrap the draft" technique to reveal logical connections and plan revisions.
  • Revising for Style - Writers employ the "paramedic" technique to enliven dead prose.
  • Editing for Presentation - Writers identify and correct patterns of error in their own and their classmates' drafts.
  • Academic Reading Strategies - Readers practice strategies for understanding dense, academic prose.
  • Giving Useful Reader Response - Writers exchange guided response forms giving feedback on thesis and posing questions to prompt revision.
  • Writing Effective Essay Exams - Writers practice strategies for composing under pressure.

To request any of our services, please complete the form below. Because our workshop staff is limited, providing an alternate time improves our ability to meet your request. The Writing Center Coordinator will contact you within 48 hours.
