Did you know that Perkins Loans have deferment and forbearance privileges?
Perkins Loans have deferment and forbearance benefits that help you if you are in financial difficulty, if you return to school, or if you enter the armed services. These deferment and forbearance benefits allow you to put your Perkins Loan payments on hold for up to three years, given in 3 month increments. The exception: in-school deferments, are the only deferment without a time limit.
Some of the common deferments are:
- At least a ½ time student
- Unemployed and unable to find full-time employment
- Experiencing economic hardship
- Volunteer Services under the Peace Corps Act
- Certain internships and residencies
- Graduate Fellowship
- U.S. Armed Services
If you don’t qualify for a deferment, forbearance options are available. The difference between the two is that forbearance accrues interest while deferments do not.
To download a Forbearance Form click here. Mail completed form to our office (view address).
If you need more information on deferments and forbearance options and you’re not sure which applies to you do not hesitate to call us at 360.650.4055.
