Regular Meeting -- November 18, 2008
Chair Roger Thompson called the meeting of the 2008-2009 Academic Coordinating Commission to order at 4:03 pm on Tuesday, November 18, 2008. There were seventeen (17) members present, the Recorder (1) and two guests (2) for a total of twenty (20).

DISCUSSION:
MACHINE TRANSLATION and ACADEMIC HONESTY
Jim Hearne presented a phrase for inclusion in the Academic Honesty Policy in the catalog and noted that improvements in Google and other translating programs provide very convincing translations especially in French and Spanish. Complaints from language teachers indicate that students may be turning in translations without citing that this is not their own work.
The topic presents a conundrum in that phrasing can allow for loopholes such as the ability to translate work in a content based class (not an English class, but biology, for example), when the original work is one’s own but written in a foreign language.
Commissioners preferred a broad statement in the catalog and suggested that individual instructors with specific concerns can be more explicit in their own course syllabi about what constitutes academic dishonesty.
Students agreed that the broader language served the purpose, since the academic dishonesty is already explicit about the requirement to cite or acknowledge material of any kind that is not one’s own work.
The Chair will communicate with areas outside of ACC like the library to ensure that the proposed language is appropriate.
Straw Vote: Commissioners took a straw vote in which they indicated preference for the phrase below to be added to the Academic Honesty Policy. The proposed draft language follows:
“Submitting the results of a machine translation program as one’s own work”
An alternative draft version which was not preferred:
“In classes directed to foreign-language learning, submitting the output of a machine
translation program as one’s own work”
A motion and final vote will take place at the December 2nd meeting.
Early Packets
Commissioners were reminded that December 2nd was the final ACC meeting of the quarter. Packets will be sent early so commissioners receive them before the Thanksgiving holiday.
