ACADEMIC COORDINATING COMMISSION MINUTES

Regular Meeting -- January 20, 2009

Chair Roger Thompson called the meeting of the 2008-2009 Academic Coordinating Commission to order at

4:00 pm on Tuesday, January 6, 2009. There were fourteen (14) members present, the Recorder (1) and five guests (5) for a total of twenty (20).

Approval of ACC minutes. Members approved minutes of January 6, 2009 as written.

Report from the Chair and Vice President of Undergraduate Education.

Steve VanderStaay reported that Student Affairs and faculty will look at freshman programs and the first-year experience in a cohesive way, in a 12-week series of meetings on Mondays. After reviewing latest research in the field, and originating a mission statement, the committee will prepare a report for ACC, with a request for follow up and further direction. Interested faculty are encouraged to contact VanderStaay.

ACTION ITEM

MOTION FROM THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE. Commissioners voted to approve the addition of the following language to Appendix D of the Catalog (Academic Dishonesty Policy and Procedure). The language will be included as one of the eight items listed as an example of plagiarism:

“Submitting the results of a machine translation program as one’s own work”

43	College of Business & Economics	1/12/09	*Postponed.* Commissioners request that CBE discuss the use of X37 rubric in courses where students study abroad and acquire Western credit. · The Chair and the Commission plan to review current policies and precedents concerning study abroad and Western credits with a goal of creating a more uniform and doable policy, and greater clarity in the historical record. Commissioners noted that policy regarding international programs is currently under review. · The registrar recalled ACC support of a previous rule allowed the use of Western course numbers only when a faculty from Western oversees the course; otherwise there can be no use of a Western rubric. · The CBE Commissioner will bring several other small issues to the curricular committee for review and a new set of minutes will return to ACC.
44	College of Fine & Performing Arts	1/9/08	Accepted. The catalog coordinator reported that the Dance Minor has been reduced by a number of credits following substantive review, and Commissioners complimented the minutes secretary for including a *“third and final copy”*. Commissioners discussed the ease or difficulty with which transfer students can enroll in major courses their first quarter.

49	Woodring College	12/4/08	Accepted. Commissioners look forward to a future conversation about TEOP, regarding curriculum, process, matching of courses. One Commissioner suggested that we need to have some solid policies relating to EESP and Teacher Education Outreach Programs.

Increasing Credits in the Majors

· Steve VanderStaay expressed concern that the major credits in Journalism have increased from 73 to 79 and asked whether this is an actual increase, or just a recalculation of current courses. VanderStaay noted that the University of Washington completes the major in fewer than 70 credits.

Liberal Arts Discussion Requested

Commissioners asked that future discussions center on the liberal arts and what we are doing to enable our students to have broad experiences across the curriculum.
