Scholastic Standing Committee Report

Discussion on Statements referred to the Admissions Minutes - SATs.

Provost Bodman reported that there will be five public hearings on the relevant proposals on the new requirements.  The proposal in the Admissions minutes may not actually pass.  Bodman added that high schools have not had sufficient notice for changes in science requirements.  Bodman also said that there are not enough qualified science teachers in the State.  In response to questions from Commissioners Bodman replied that there are lots of possibilities that allow satisfaction of these requirements including use of the advance placement testing, GED equivalents, Running Start in junior and senior year of high school, and “college in the high school” credits.

Regarding the Scholastic Standing Committee Report

Russ Tiberii, Academic Advising, expressed interest in tracking the graduation rates of students who have been reinstated, as well as the length of time to graduation following reinstatement.  Currently a process of reinstatement involves talking to two faculty members, and if there is disagreement, a third faculty reviews the application.

Regarding the WASL

Statewide discussion about the WASL does not currently concern Admissions.  WASL scores may only be used as qualifications for scholarships.  The Provost emphasized that taking a WASL in sophomore year of high school is not very relevant to later college admission.
