ABSTRACT of Faculty Senate  May 1, 2006

Bill Lyne, Senate President, called the meeting of the Faculty Senate to order at 4:04 pm on May 1, 2006.  Senators accepted the Senate minutes of April 17, Standing Committee minutes, and reviewed minutes from the Parking Fee Committee.  Lyne wished Provost Bodman a Happy Birthday in absentia.

·   Lyne reported that the Faculty Senate at Central Washington University is running as usual and that a new handbook is being rewritten that will not overlap with the union contract.

·   Lyne welcomed Gayle Shipley, Director for Central Health and Safety, who reported on Federal, State and local meetings being held to address emergencies that would affect campus life such as a flu pandemic or earthquake.  Western is represented on all subcommittees of the Whatcom County task force addressing these issues.  Shipley encouraged constituents to prepare personally and to view planning templates at http://www.cdc.gov/ or http://www.pandemicflu.gov/

·   Senators heard Tim Wynn, Director of Facilities, ask for promotion ideas for the Combined Fund Drive, and learned that any 501C-3 charity can be named as a gift recipient through the Combined Fund; that Fund charities receive about $4 to $6 more per every $100 gift than if donated to separately; and that contributions can be made through pre-tax payroll deduction.  Senators suggested that the Fund be offered during the Benefits Open Enrollment period.

·   Senators passed a motion to support “that funding to purchase the old Drive-In for the State of Washington should not come from the pockets of Faculty, Staff, or Students”.

·   Senators heard Barbara Audley, Director of Extended Education and Summer Programs, and Stephanie Salzman, Dean of Woodring College explain that EESP’s former sites have been combined to four completely self-sustaining programs in Bremerton, Oak Harbor, North Seattle, and Everett. Curriculum at these accredited sites matches the high quality offered on campus and is approved by the Academic Coordinating Commission.  Summer School revenue over and above costs is divided between the Provost and the colleges.

·   Senators adjourned at 6:00 p.m.
