ABSTRACT of Faculty Senate March 6, 2006
Bill Lyne, Senate President, called the meeting of the Faculty Senate to order at 4:04 pm on March 6, 2006. Senators accepted minutes of February 13th, and Standing Committee minutes.
· Lyne explained some aspects of the future relationship between United Faculty of Western and the Senate following the recent vote establishing a union presence.
· President Morse confirmed she will respect the legal obligations that result from the union’s presence on campus. Morse communicated her appreciation and respect for the Faculty Senate and its important role in the process of shared governance. Morse believes the process has been effective and intends to continue the Senate’s involvement. Morse urged collaboration and self-education to benefit the institution and its faculty and students. Provost Bodman indicated his full support of the statement.
· Morse congratulated the Theater Department on the current excellent production of Evita and encouraged faculty to attend.
· Morse reported good input at open meetings of the Waterfront Committee and seeks representation from the Senate. Dean Brad Smith serves on the Waterfront Advisory Committee for the Port and will provide an overview on citizens’ groups.
· The Senate is preparing a statement refuting David Horowitz’ recent book that lists Professor Estrada. The statement will condemn bills appearing in several states that attempt to restrict academic freedom.
· The Senate passed a motion charging the University Planning Council to “review the processes involved in planning major construction projects and set forth guidelines for future construction projects.”
Senators moved to a faculty caucus at 5:20 p.m. and adjourned at 6:10 p.m.
