ABSTRACT of Faculty Senate January 9, 2006
Bill Lyne, Senate President, called the first Winter Quarter meeting of the Faculty Senate to order at 4:06 pm on January 9th, 2006. Senators approved minutes of November 21, 2005 and accepted Standing Committee minutes, including a motion to rename Fairhaven as “Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies”.
· Lyne reported: 1) a report from the ad hoc committee on administrative review will be ready for the next Senate meeting; 2) a web link to a “Voter’s Guide” on collective bargaining will be mailed to the faculty as soon as the guide is posted on the Senate website; 3) two General Faculty Assemblies on collective bargaining are planned for Monday, January 30th, and Thursday, January 26th at 4 p.m., location TBA.

President Morse reported: 1) progress on an equity and compression study by a
committee of which both the Senate President and Vice President are members; 2)
creation of a permanent policy review committee that will have faculty
membership; 3) establishment of a pilot project to cover minor capital
expenses moving expenses (corrected 1 13 06) which are no
longer funded by the legislature. The President’s Planning and Resource Council
may recommend funding such projects through a line item in the budget.
· Provost Bodman distributed a draft of a vision and mission statement currently under development by the Strategic Planning Task Force. Co-chair Jeff Newcomer reported that much more is on the way.
· Stephanie Bowers, Vice President for University Advancement, Western Foundation, explained the activities and successes of the Foundation and responded to Senators’ questions. Bowers described the Phonathon in which 50 students, making 3000 calls per night, reach 48% of 70,000 prospective donors, and raised $454,000 in 2005. The Foundation strives to reach alumni connected in a lifelong way to Western through a favored department, and sponsors campus tours and several newsletters. While the 290 current endowments are used mainly for scholarships, Foundation Board members will consider projects in the future such as potential housing for faculty recruits. No Foundation money is used in the operational budget.
