ABSTRACT of Faculty Senate Meeting September 26, 2005
Bill Lyne, Senate President, called the first Fall Quarter meeting of the 2005-06 Senate to order at 4:04 pm. Senators approved minutes of May 26, 2005 and Standing Committee minutes.
· Lyne summarized items from Spring Quarter as follows: 1) Chris Suczek has agreed to chair the Admin Review committee and establish a review schedule; 2) It is unlikely that the Public Employee Relations Commission will hand down a judgment on a union vote prior to late November; 3) Provost Bodman has agreed to distribute a breakdown of the 25-1/2 tenure track and other position allocations at next meeting; 4) A reinvigorated Salary and Welfare Committee will look into Summer School wages and appointments, and will recommend retention, equity and compression fund allocations to administration; 5) Vice President Pierce has agreed to provide lists of his committees with faculty representation.
· President Morse welcomed Senators and announced that the Waterfront Committee, the Port planners, and a possible consultant will continue meeting regularly; Morse announced the retirement of Judy McNickle; Morse has been doing outreach efforts in Washington, D.C. with hopes of financial benefit to the social sciences and the physical and life sciences.
· Kris Bulcroft thanked the Senate on behalf of Provost Bodman for its participation in the new faculty orientation. Jeff Newcomer summarized the report of the Ad Hoc Committee on FIGs, and Bulcroft distributed a Response to the FIG Report for Senate review.
· Senators passed a motion requesting implementation of current bicycle policies. Faculty on the Central Health and Safety Committee will oversee policy review.
· Constituent Concerns included: lack of sufficient time in class schedules to get from Old Main to the Communications Facilities; concerns regarding the parking and transportation budgets; effect of recent pushback to 7 p.m. for faculty parking with consequences for faculty in Woodring, other faculty involved in performances, and event schedules, as well as intangible effects to students and the University mission such as the lack of faculty presence on the campus.
· Following an informal discussion, Senators adjourned at 6 p.m.
