ABSTRACT of Faculty Senate Meeting
September 30, 2002

John Purdy, 2002-2003 Senate
President, called the first Fall Quarter meeting of the Senate to order at 4:04
pm. Senators approved the minutes
of June 3, 2002, and welcomed Paula Rustan, Executive Director, University
Planning and Assessment. University President Karen Morse reported on meetings
with Bob Edie and HEC Board members to expand media support for higher
education.
§
Purdy reviewed items discussed by
the Executive Committee during the Senate retreat, including an initiative for
soliciting faculty participation in governance.
§
Senators passed a motion for a
faculty vote on the new proposal to divide the College of Arts and Sciences into
two new colleges. Senators proposed
that ballot results be tallied by the October 28th meeting, and
agreed to establish other ways for written faculty response.
§
Senators proposed a General
Faculty Assembly on restructuring to take place on Thursday, October 17th
from 4 to 5:30 in Arntzen 100.
§
Among other items, Senators agreed to to ensure public discussion on models
and recommendations from the General Education Task Force, reviewed the intent
of the “Ombudsperson” definition in the revised faculty grievance procedure,
and reviewed proposals on limited term faculty from a report from the University
Planning Council.
