All Faculty
As I hope you know, Western is committed to providing our faculty with the best possible teaching technologies in classrooms. Much progress has been made in both renovating classrooms to include teaching technologies and in enhancing our classroom scheduling process to ensure that faculty who need those classrooms actually get them. We want to continue this progress by renovating additional classrooms so that we can keep pace with growing faculty demand. For that reason, we are beginning to plan now for further renovations to be completed during the summer of 2001 and summer of 2002. The University has committed the funds necessary to allow us to have construction bids ready to go early in the next biennium, so that newly renovated classrooms can be available for your use early in the 2001 school year.
Input from faculty members is critical to the success of
our classroom renovations. Over the
last year and one-half, faculty response to two prior surveys about classroom
renovations was invaluable in both our selection of classrooms and in the choice
of teaching technologies for those classrooms. You can help ensure that we receive adequate faculty input by
taking just a few minutes to fill out the attached survey form.
The survey asks for your opinion on two major choices we face in planning
the renovations and also asks you to rank the classrooms that you think should
have priority for renovation. There
is also room on the form for general comments.
Such comments in past surveys have been very important in giving us a
full and balanced view of faculty concerns about classroom renovations.
If you would like, please feel free to contact me directly
at either 650-2272 or Larry.Gilbert@wwu.edu.
We look forward to your input.

In
planning for funding and sequencing of future classroom renovations, campus
planners need guidance on whether to give priority to smaller seminar classrooms
(i.e. < 30 seats) or priority to average size classrooms (i.e. 50-75 seats).
My opinion is that the campus should:

Previous
faculty surveys have shown a clear preference for renovating Level 4 classrooms
(those with a built-in computer, computer display, podium, and full media).
Do you agree or disagree with the statement that “Western should also
renovate some classrooms for use of video playback equipment, slide projectors,
and overhead projectors only (Level 2).”
