| ORGANIZATION: | Birchwood Neighborhood Association |
| POSITION: | Assistant to Birchwood Neighborhood Association. |
| INTERNSHIP DATES: | |
| JOB_DESCRIPTION: | The Birchwood Neighborhood will be starting their neighborhood plan early 2008. Residents of the neighborhood have started the update process by breaking into subject specific committees. These committees will work together to rewrite sections on land use/zoning, infrastructure, and neighborhood design. A major portion of the plan update process will be the development and distribution of a neighborhood survey. This survey is a strategy for gathering data and opinions that will allow the committees to accurately represent the neighborhood’s wants and needs. The Birchwood neighborhood would like to invite students from Western to take an active role in the update process and specifically in the creation, distribution and collection of the neighborhood survey. This is a unique opportunity to take part in the development of policies that will dictate the formal, social, environmental and financial growth of the neighborhood. |
| QUALIFICATIONS: | Currently the subcommittees are attending meetings the first Tuesday of each month in addition to monthly neighborhood wide meetings. On average there are 2 meetings a month planned. These meetings generally run from 6.30pm till 8.30 and are informal gatherings at a house in the neighborhood. Initially the Birchwood Neighborhood Association would like to invite students from any program to participate in the development of a neighborhood survey. The form and complexity of this survey has yet to be determined. We are interested in your thoughts on the most effective way to approach such a problem. |

| ORGANIZATION: | Student Conservation Association |
| POSITION: | Natural/Cultural Resources Interpretation Intern |
| INTERNSHIP DATES: | 4/15/08-8/29/08 |
| JOB_DESCRIPTION: | Although established as a historic site, almost two-thirds of Vicksburg National Military Park's present-day landscape has reverted to a more natural state, comprised of the unique loess soil ridge-and-ravine habitat. And, with the help of the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, the park is now covered with a mixed-hardwood forest containing some of the oldest growth in the state. The park is now in the process of developing a Cultural Landscape Report/Environmental Assessment and Long-Range Interpretive Plan to aid in determining the future direction of resource management and administration. In order to supplement these studies, enhancement of visitor awareness and experiences regarding these intricate relationships between the park's natural and cultural resources will be accomplished through development and delivery of interpretive programs. Vicksburg, MS, was key to both the Confederate and Union armies during the Civil War, due mainly to its strategic location high on the ancient loess bluffs of the eastern Mississippi River shore. It was this natural terrain of the surrounding area that determined the important role of the city's position on the river. Creating an almost impenetrable defense for the Confederate army, the land boasted high ridgelines bordered by steep ravines filled with thick tangle and scrub - formidable enough to daunt even the most gallant of the soldiers in blue. Develop and deliver interpretive programs on antebellum landscape features through present-day, natural resource uses during the Civil War, terrain importance to Civil War strategy, and the Civilian Conservation Corps; conduct nature walks/hikes; assist with summer Living History programs. |
