Chemistry Department
Position:
Assistant Professor, Chemistry. Three (3) full-time, tenure-track positions beginning September 16, 2007 to be recruited from the following areas: biochemistry, organic chemistry, and inorganic chemistry. Candidates with interdisciplinary interests are strongly encouraged to apply. Salary is commensurate with qualifications.
Duties:
Teach general chemistry and undergraduate and graduate courses in field of specialization. Participate in student advisement and departmental committees and activities. Direct student research projects including the presentation and publication of research. Write extramural grant proposals in support of curriculum improvement and research.
Qualifications:
Required:
Ph.D. required by time of appointment
Required areas are biochemistry or organic chemistry or inorganic chemistry
Strong record of or potential for effective teaching.
Strong record of or potential for scholarship and ability to develop an externally funded research program involving undergraduate and M.S. students.
Preferred:
Post-doctoral experience
Desired:
Demonstrated experience working with a diverse student body is a desired attribute.
Department:
The department of 17 faculty offers B.S. and M.S. degree programs in chemistry and biochemistry, with the former certified by the ACS. WWU is a primarily undergraduate institution committed to excellence in both teaching and research. The department has state-of-the art facilities with 8500 sq. ft. of dedicated research space and a large portfolio of modern instrumentation. Current external grant support averages $1M annually. The department is also active in the development of new educational materials, textbooks, and innovative teaching methods. More than $2M in support from Research Corporation, the M. J. Murdock Charitable Trust, and WWU is being used to provide competitive start-up packages, student and faculty summer research stipends, student travel support, and matching funds for new instrumentation.
