Assistant Professor in Computer Science

Computer Science Department

Position

Applications are invited for a tenure-track position in Computer Science, at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin September 2007.  We seek individuals who are committed to undergraduate and masters’ student education and who will establish vigorous research programs in collaboration with students.

 

Required Qualifications

Applicants must hold, or be soon eligible for, a PhD in Computer Science, with evidence of ability or potential to teach across the spectrum of the curriculum, and scholarship in a core area of Computer Science.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates should have experience in curriculum development, and experience or potential for handling a reasonable share of the administrative duties of the department.  Candidates should show evidence of engagement of students in exploration of Computer Science concepts and have potential for collaborative research with existing faculty and students and for making a contribution to the MS program.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Faculty members are expected to be excellent teachers, who actively engage students in exploration of Computer Science concepts.  The current standard teaching load is two courses (typically 6 to 8 classroom hours total per week) each quarter, with teaching assignments made in agreement with the department chair.  Faculty members are also expected to pursue scholarly activity in collaboration with colleagues and students, and to undertake a reasonable share of administrative tasks.

 

Environment

Western Washington University is situated in Bellingham, a city of 70,000 overlooking Bellingham Bay and the San Juan Islands in Puget Sound.  The university is 90 miles north of Seattle, 55 miles south of Vancouver, BC, and an hour’s drive from the ski area on 10,778 foot Mt Baker.  With excellent recreational opportunities, and proximity to metropolitan facilities and major research institutions, Bellingham is a culturally and physically active community. 

 

Department

The department comprises eleven full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty and several adjunct faculty.  It offers a BS program, accredited by ABET, and a MS program.  The department also administers an Internet Studies Center, which offers certification in Web technologies. The department has recently occupied new facilities, with ample office space and excellent laboratory space and equipment.

Existing research interests within the department include parallel and distributed computing systems, machine learning and robotics, computational linguistics, data mining, graphics and animation, and computer security.
