Position
This is a full time, temporary position (24 -36 months). The position will be the project leader for a 3 year National Science Foundation funded project to create web-based educational tools for Western’s unique and innovative Integrated Laboratory Network (ILN). The salary range is $52,000 to $59,000 (DOQ) with a full benefits package including over 4 weeks of paid vacation.
Responsibilities
Translate both pedagogical principles of science lab education and educational use of science instrumentation into creative web functions and modules.
Coordinate, evaluate, and select input from content specialists and instructional designers to build replicable web-based teaching and laboratory exercises, leading to development of web-based tools and strategies for national dissemination of concepts related to the Integrated Laboratory Network.
Serve as project leader to coordinate the gathering, analysis and selection of educational content for instruction on Integrated Laboratory Network principles and the translation of that content into web-based tools and functions suitable for nation-wide dissemination.
Provide leadership in the development, creation, implementation and maintenance of websites, web tools, interactive web-based instructional products, and graphical interfaces for web-based ILN applications for nation-wide use.
Coordinate distribution and supervision of work by assigning and monitoring web and educational development tasks to project team members at Empire State College, the University of British Columbia, and other institutions.
Work with content specialists to test and evaluate ILN web tools in a variety of teaching applications and revises as needed.
Required Qualifications
A completed bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in information systems, science, or a related field.
Two years experience in the design and development of interactive web sites, preferably science oriented educational websites.
Demonstrated ability to coordinate development of web-based materials and tools for instruction.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with science educators and students.
Demonstrated ability to design and develop dynamic web-based applications using current programming environments such as Java or .NET, as well as database design and development tools.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in discipline related to the Integrated Laboratory Network.
Experience working on instructional design or training development projects.
Project leadership skills including strong organizational and task management skills and working on multi-disciplinary instructional development teams.
Demonstrated ability to form on-line communities of practice in an at-a-distance professional environment.
Demonstrated ability to integrate databases into web-based products; knowledge of database design; experience with Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, or MySQL.
Experience with Blackboard or other web-based course management software for curricular support.
