Position

This is a full time, FLSA exempt position, including a full benefits package. This position is responsible for providing advisement and professional expertise to assigned programmatic offices within Campus Recreation Services in order to ensure quality programs, enhance the campus community and individual student development, organizational leadership opportunities, and the educational value of the student involvement experience. 

 

Salary

$31,000 – 35,000 depending on qualifications and experience; excellent benefit package.

 

Responsibilities

Provide general advising and leadership to student groups involved in aquatic and youth programs to insure a quality experience for participating members. Advising broadly includes counseling, educating, and leading both individual students and groups of students.

 

Hire, direct, coach, mentor and teach lifeguards, instructors for aquatic, and youth programs. 

 

Actively represent the aquatic and youth program needs of the campus community to the department and maintain an awareness of emerging and ongoing issues across the industry.  Provide on-site advisement at events as warranted by program needs.

 

Provide individual training and consultation on program specific needs and group training on topics of pertinence to all aquatic and youth program staff.  

 

Oversee the Aquatic and youth program payroll, equipment and equipment budgets.

 

Provide education and training to ensure compliance with student employment policies and the guidelines of Campus Recreation Services and Western Washington University.

 

Maintain an awareness of programming trends and other information that may impact Campus Recreation aquatic activities programming. 

 

Formulate a balanced pool schedule including classes, rentals, reservations, and open recreation times.

 

Evaluate current programs and assess future needs and makes recommendations to improve quality and meet organizational objectives.

 

Assure a safe experience for employees, volunteers, and program participants through an active program of risk analysis and management.

 

Teach Life Guarding and CPR/1st Aid classes for the Physical Education Health and Recreation Department.  Teach CPR/1st Aid/ AED classes for Campus Recreation Services professional and student staff.  Teach the Water Safety Instructor Course for the Campus Recreation Services student instructors.

 

Maintain thorough knowledge of Campus Recreation Services, university, and state policies and procedures as they relate to aquatic and youth programming activities.

 

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Recreation Management or closely related field.

 

Three years of administrative experience in recreation and /or athletics preferably experience in planning, advising and coordinating aquatic facilities and aquatic/youth programs. Master’s degree in a related field may substitute for required administrative experience.

 

WSIT Certified (Water Safety Instructor Training); CPR and First-Aid Instructor certification (Adult, Child and Infant Certified); American Red Cross Life guard Instructor certification.

 

Ability to communicate effectively and professionally, including written, interpersonal, and public speaking skills.

 

Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with a diverse student population in a positive and empowering manner and possess a strong commitment to advocating for diversity and the values of diversity.

 

Experience in budget development and management.

 

Demonstrated organizational and time management skills, with an ability to manage multiple tasks in a dynamic work environment. 

 

Demonstrated ability to work independently, be resourceful and take initiative.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in Recreation Management or closely related field.

 

Administrative experience in higher education setting.

 

Knowledge of student leadership and student development theory and their applications in practice.

 

Experience developing and presenting training programs for student leaders and/or employees.

 

Proficient using Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, Internet Explorer, Outlook, Publisher or similar programs.

 

Knowledge of current resources and trends in campus recreation activities and programming.

 

Condition of Employment

Willingness to work early morning, weekend and evening hours is necessary as many organization meetings and events occur during these times.
