Associate Professor of Cross-Cultural Psychology

Position/Salary:
Associate Professor, tenured or tenure-track, beginning September 2007, consisting of a full-time position with responsibilities that include (a) teaching and (b) associate director of the Center of Cross-Cultural Research (with expectation of director at a later date). The candidate’s primary scholarly domain within psychology is open (e.g., developmental, social, clinical-counseling). Salary is competitive and dependent upon qualifications.
Qualifications:
Required
Ph.D. in Psychology
Evidence of successful teaching
Demonstrated ability to involve students in their research and other educational experiences
Active research program in psychology and culture
Publication record commensurate with experience
Grant proposal writing skills
Leadership skills or experiences in working collaboratively with faculty and students in cross-cultural research and educational activities.
Preferred
Demonstrated ability to teach at both the undergraduate and master’s degree level and have a commitment to excellence in teaching
Experience working with diverse, multicultural faculty and student populations
Leadership position with faculty
Demonstrated success in obtaining grants and contracts
Budgeting experience
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to: (1) teach courses in cross-cultural psychology as well as continue scholarly research activities in psychology and culture and (2) assume the responsibilities of associate director of the Center for Cross-Cultural Research (http://www.ac.wwu.edu/~culture/ ). Teaching responsibilities likely will include undergraduate cross-cultural courses (Psychology and Culture; Seminar in Cross-Cultural Psychology), a graduate seminar in cross-cultural psychology, and courses in the faculty’s specialty field as they fit the needs of the department. Responsibilities of associate director of the Center for Cross-Cultural Research include working with an advisory committee to promote faculty research, funding opportunities, teaching and student involvement in cross-cultural, multicultural, or other diversity research topics and issues. Some budgetary responsibilities will also be involved. Additionally, the candidate will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with 16 associates of the center and other faculty in projects consistent with the Center’s mission.
Center for Cross-Cultural Research
The Center is housed within and is an integral part of the Department of Psychology. It was started in 1969 in response to the Euro-American bias in psychological theory, research and practical applications that were common at that time. Through the collective activities of its associates, the Center has made substantial contributions regarding the influence of culture in all aspects of psychological functioning.
Department
The department has 25 permanent full-time faculty, B.A. programs in psychology and three graduate programs in Experimental Psychology (M.S), Mental Health Counseling (M.S.), and School Counseling (M.Ed.). (http://www.wwu.edu/~psych)

Location
The University is located in Bellingham, Washington, a city of approximately 70,000. Situated in a scenic area between Seattle and Vancouver, British Columbia, the University offers easy access to major research libraries.
