Tenure-Track Assistant Professor

Department of Physics and Astronomy

 

Position:

One full-time, tenure-track assistant professor of physics, beginning September 2007. The Physics and Astronomy Department of Western Washington University (WWU) invites applications for a position in Observational astronomy or astrophysics, starting September 2007. 

 

Qualifications:

Required:

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree in astronomy, astrophysics or physics by time of appointment. 

 

Preferred:

Candidates should be actively engaged in research with a strong publication record and should have experience teaching and be qualified and eager to teach upper and lower division physics courses at the undergraduate level. Post-doctoral experience is preferred. Ability to work with a diverse student body and staff.

 

Responsibilities: 

A successful applicant will be expected to pursue an on-campus research program that will involve undergraduate students and provide projects for physics majors. The successful candidate will also be expected to write grant proposals to gain outside support.

 

Department:       

There are nine full-time faculty and 60-65 undergraduate physics majors.  Physics B.S. and Math/Physics B.A.Ed. degrees are offered.  Detailed information is available at http://www.physics.wwu.edu on the World Wide Web.

 

University: 

WWU is a public university with about 12,000 students. Master’s degrees are offered in biology, chemistry, computer science, geology, mathematics. We are centrally located with respect to major research universities such as the University of Washington, University of British Columbia, and Simon Fraser University.

 

Location:   

The campus overlooks Bellingham Bay and the City of Bellingham.  Seattle is 90 miles to the south, Vancouver, British Columbia is 50 miles to the north.  The North Cascade Mountains are to the east, and the San Juan Islands are to the west, offering a wealth of recreation opportunities.
