ABSTRACTS

Urban Modeling Using ESRI’s ArcMap and ArcScene, & Google’s SketchUp,

Chris Behee, City of Bellingham, Planning and Community Development

Bellingham is in the midst of master-planning efforts for it's Waterfront District, Samish Way, and Fountain District urban villages.  Modeling these areas in 3D, allows planners, the public, and elected officials to effectively visualize existing conditions, and future landuse alternatives.

ESRI's ArcGIS suite contains a variety of tools for 3D modeling of existing GIS datasets.  Google's SketchUp is an affordable, easy-to-learn tool for building 3D models and adding architectural detail and realism to 3D objects.  This presentation will highlight techniques for using the resources available in SketchUp to enhance 3D models built in ArcScene.

Redeveloping the GIS Viewer Application with ArcGIS Server & Web Services

Don Burdick, City of Bellingham GIS/Technical Services Manager

The City of Bellingham is in the process of updating their GIS based customer service application CityIQ to utilize web services and ArcGIS Server 9.3. The original application, built with MapObjects and Visual Basic, is used by over 250 city employees and demand on the application is beyond its original development intent. The first release of the updated application is expected to be provided to the existing users within the next couple of months. The new application takes advantage of the JavaScript development environment provided ArcGIS Server 9.3 and interaction with web services.  The presentation will outline the requirements definition process and applications specifications and provide a short demonstration of the functionality.
