Northwest Washington GIS User Group
December 13, 2002 Agenda
Hosted by Community Transit
9:00-9:45 a.m.: Introductions & GIS “roundtable” discussion. Time to introduce yourself, your organization/agency and give a brief sentence or two about project(s) you’re working on that may interest the group.
9:45-10:00 a.m.: Break. Have some cookies & coffee. Network and catch up with colleagues from across the region.
10:00-10:30 a.m.: HAZUS: Ed Quarles of Washington State Emergency Management will discuss the HAZards in the United States program. HAZUS is an ArcView-based earthquake loss estimation tool provided by FEMA and supported by Washington State Emergency Management.
10:30-11:00 a.m.: LUFAM: Ed Fairbanks (Snohomish County Information Services –GIS) will present Snohomish County Planning and Development Services Land Use Forecast Allocation Model (LUFAM).
The Land Use Forecast Allocation Model (LUFAM) is a GIS-based application for analyzing regional growth statistics within local planning areas.
Regional planning organizations (e.g. PSRC) generate long-range forecasts for Population and Employment growth using analysis zones (FAZs) that usually comprise one or more census tracts in size. LUFAM distributes these numbers to individual parcels within each FAZ by assessing each parcel's development suitability. Factors that affect land-development suitability in the model include: zoning, comprehensive plan designation, proximity to similar existing uses, environmental constraints, and others. The resulting parcel-level statistics can be re-aggregated to compare expected growth trends against current land development capacity for any geographic study area. Land Use Planners at Snohomish County use LUFAM to interpret regional forecasts on a local scale, particularly across administrative/statistical boundaries.
11:00-11:30 a.m.: Community Transit/Everett Transit On Board Survey. Roland Behee (Community Transit) will present the geographic analysis of a joint-agency transit survey. The survey, performed over one day, includes detailed demographic and transit information for more than 10,000 trips in Snohomish and King Counties. Roland will describe the ArcGIS analysis process and show how results of such surveys contribute to transit service planning.
11:30 a.m. – Noon: Further discussion, WAGIC report, March meeting details, adjourn.
