Looking to sharpen your theatre skills?
All elements of theatrical production – from script development to the final show – are explored in workshops held in WWU’s Performing Arts Center (PAC). Develop characters and scenes, speak and move effectively on stage, work in an ensemble, search the costume and scene shops, and rehearse for a grand finale showcase on the stage of Old Main Theatre.

Spend two dynamic weeks (three for Secondary grades!) gaining skills in a variety of areas:

  • Improvisation
  • Vocal and body warm-up techniques
  • Monologue and scene writing
  • Stage movement, blocking and directing
  • Technical theatre skill building
  • Auditioning skill building
  • Choreography

Elementary SYTI – A Summer of Seuss!
Join us as we bring the stories of Dr. Seuss alive on the stage. We'll be creating and acting out those wacky characters from the beloved Dr. Seuss books such as "Horton Hears a Who," "The Lorax" and "The Cat in the Hat."  Then we'll top it all off with our PAC Mainstage production of "Seussical: The Musical!"

Secondary SYTI –
It's "ENCORE!" Time Again!

Try out your acting chops in your favorite scenes, monologues and songs from movies, plays and musicals. Get one-on-one, focused training in acting, characterization, designing, movement and more! Our advanced theatre education students will lead you through coaching and shaping your showcase materials as well as teaching you fun improvisation games, warm-ups and character techniques. So bring that scene, song or speech you've always wanted to try and we'll make it happen - and if you don't have any ideas... we've got plenty to share!

Each institute culminates in an original showcase produced on the stage of Old Main Theatre.

All classes are supervised by WWU Theatre Faculty Dr. Deborah Currier, Chair of the Theatre Arts and Dance Department and Drama in Education Program Director, and are held at WWU's Performing Arts Center. Workshops are taught by upper division Theatre and/or Education Majors who provide in-depth mentoring and coaching.

Showcase Performances (Old Main Theatre)
Elementary - Friday, July 6 at 12:00 pm and 7:00 pm
Secondary - Friday, July 13 at 7:00 p.m.

Make great, new friends as you experience the excitement and glamour only the world of theatre can give you!

Wait, that's not all! Join the cast of the summer production – SEUSSICAL!

SEUSSICAL IS OPEN TO ALL LEVELS OF STYI.  ALL SYTI students have the option of a guaranteed role at no extra cost!

SEUSSICAL is a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza! The show brings to life all of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie, and a little boy with a big  imagination--Jojo. "Oh, the Thinks You Can Think" captures the show's spirit of imagination, as the colorful characters transport us from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisible world of the Whos.

The story centers around Horton the Elephant, who finds himself faced with a double challenge--not only must he protect his tiny friend  Jojo (and all the invisible Whos) from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left to his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him, the only one who recognizes "his kind and his powerful heart." Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant, in a story that makes you laugh and cry.
