SPY CAMP DESCRIPTIONS
Elementary - Entering Grades 4-6
July 7-11
James Sullivan holds a master’s in technology education from WWU and is a 14 year veteran with WWU youth programs. Sullivan teaches Sci-Ma-Tech (Science, Math and Technology) at Brier Terrace Middle School which won the 2007 Innovative Program of the Year by the Association of Career and Technical Education.
Super Science Mysteries
Have fun investigating and solving science mysteries and phenomenon. Conduct experiments – “Chemical Reactions”, “Crime Lab Chemistry”, “What a Gas”, and many more! Ask questions, make hypothesizes, manipulate variables, formulate conclusions, and interpret results in order to solve puzzling science mysteries. Collect data by making observations, drawing diagrams and recording measurements in a lab journal. Students will follow the scientific method to build and reinforce investigative skills, communication abilities and deductive reasoning through super science activities.
Cost: $285
Ted Matts received a secondary teaching certification from WWU and holds a BS in Environmental Science with a minor in Chemistry. An enthusiastic science teacher at Mount Baker Junior High involved with many environmental volunteer efforts, Matts has prior background as a park ranger and restoration manager.
July 21-25
Geology Field Camp
Journey from summit to shoreline and survey earth processes that make the Pacific Northwest what it is today - and will be tomorrow. Explore Mount Baker's volcanic past, and experience the power of glacial erosion and wave action on area beaches. Classify crystals, collect rock specimens, and unearth marine fossils. Make observations of earth processes in the field as well as in the coastal lab. Investigate tectonic plates, earthquakes, landslides, and make a chocolate volcano to find out about the morphology of composite volcanoes – like Mount Baker! Students will gain a better understanding of the forces that have shaped the Puget Sound and the Western Cascade Mountains.
Cost: $285
Robert J. Rex holds a B.A. in earth science and a B.M. in classical guitar. He is a substitute teacher for the Bellingham School District and teaches marine science aboard the Snow Goose marine research vessel in Bellingham Bay. Rex, a five year veteran of WWU’s youth programs, composes and performs music locally.

Adventures in TV Broadcasting
“Quiet on the set…you’re on in 5..4..3..2” Create and produce a daily show and find out how to communicate your ideas visually. Become part of a broadcasting team who write, act and shoot film to produce a newscast, talk show or special interest program. Begin each day with a meeting to develop the style, story board, script, props, etc. Experience the various roles of a production team – in front of the camera, behind the camera and on the cutting room floor – by rotating through the roles with each new show. Build technical skills using video cameras, editing software and by creating a DVD of your series to share with family and friends. Gain a better understanding of the basics of broadcasting and, “Stay tuned next week for another incredible show!” (Class limited to 10 students.)
Cost: $290
AJ Barse holds a Bachelor’s of Arts in Education and taught for Central Kitsap Schools. He has worked in digital arts for 10 years. Currently working on his Master’s of Education at Western Washington University, Barse recently finished post-production on a short film for the Apple Insomnia Film Festival. Also an accomplished musician, he produced an independent album, “Acoustical Peace.”

July 7-11
Creative Design and Engineering (Grades 5-6)
Design, build, analyze, and test C02-powered vehicles and electric motors. Apply a five-step approach to problem solving that integrates science and math skills as each project progresses to completion. Calculate and experiment with lift, drag and velocity. That’s not all! Construct a solar oven – test it out with a hot dog roast – and visit WWU’s Vehicle Research Institute to learn more about alternate energy sources. Discover the wonders of technology and how it shapes every day life. Cost: $285
