Building Cross-Cultural Connections
CSD 437 (8 credits)
June 25- August 2, 2013
Explore Guatemala and expand your cultural competence by engaging in cross-cultural service and immersion. Students will participate in worthwhile and meaningful service while working with children and families in educational, health and food distribution projects. Travel through Guatemala’s cities, villages, terrain and vast archeological sites. Converse and learn about daily life with local community members. Join Western faculty Dr. Barbara Mathers-Schmidt this summer.
- Develop a broader understanding of global citizenship and the ethics of travel and volunteering
- Make a difference by participating in service learning projects in and near Antigua
- Explore the history, politics, cultures and social issues of Guatemala
- Participate in language immersion courses to enrich daily interactions with local people
- Learn about the rich Mayan culture and history through readings and an excursion to Tikal, one of the largest Mayan archaeological sites
- Travel to villages near Antigua, Chichicastenango and Lake Atitlan
