COURSES

Italian 137 (5 credits)
Professor Massimiliano Tomasi

We will cover lessons 1-8 of Prego! An Invitation to Italian by Lazzarino et al. You will gain a functional knowledge of basic grammatical structures and vocabulary. By the end of the fifth week of instruction you will be able to talk and write in present and past time and be sufficiently proficient to carry out simple tasks in the target language. You will feel comfortable reading any beginners’ material and will be able to engage in simple conversations. The class will be conducted almost entirely in Italian. The on-site location provides an excellent opportunity to experience and use the target language in a stimulating linguistic and cultural setting.

Art History (4 credits)
Professor Piergiacomo Petrioli

Rediscovery of Humanity: Renaissance in Central Italy
Journey through the rich pageant of Renaissance art and culture, and obtain the critical tools with which to analyze, understand and appreciate more fully the works of art produced in central Italy from the mid-13th to the mid-15th centuries. Explore how changing styles in art reflected contemporary history and cultural attitudes. Through lectures and visits to museums, churches and other places of historical or artistic interest in and around Siena and Florence, you will have every opportunity to place your studies from the classroom in context and to see works by the great masters in the original. Gain knowledge of Medieval and Renaissance art in Central Italy, and its historical and cultural background.

Note: This art history course will be accepted as a 300-level course, upper division elective for majors in art history, as long as you bring your coursework & transcript back to your advisor.
