Camera trapping with Cuddeback Cameras
This Year:
The 2006 Costa Rica Travel Course was the first year that the Cuddeback cameras were utilized in Carara National Park.

The goals of the camera team were to scout ideal areas for Cuddeback deployment, as well as to theorize on future rolls for the Cuddeback equipment.

Both Cuddebacks were set up near animal trails approximately 10-20 meters away from the main park trail. During their operation, the cameras captured six identifiable animals, and a number of off-trail hikers.

The Future:
Suggested uses for the Cuddeback equipment for future groups include: Trail use monitoring and statistics giving park visitors an idea of what to expect to see on the trails in particular seasons/times Integration of park officials in camera trap operation. Posting of Cuddeback pictures in main station, to provide visitors with an idea of local mammal populations. Permanent Cuddeback placement in the park .

Bird Recordings
Methods

Five sites, all within three kilometers of the Carara Biological Station were selected for ease of access, and proximity to the trails . Ten minute recordings were taken at each site. One objective of the experiment was to test whether ten minutes was a sufficient amount of time to estimate the amount of species in an area. All sites were relatively similar in composition.

Water Monitoring
Top right: Tarcoles river where students learned how to do water quality tests.

The Quebrada Bonita river being sampled. Both streams were sampled and compared and the Quebrada was overall cleaner because drains Carara National Park and the water can be filtered by natural vegetation before entering into the steam. Also the Tarcoles is a major river and gets gray water among other untreated waste from the local cities. The Tarcoles was also having mining done directly in the river.
