Registration Information

To assist you with the summer registration process, review the Registration Checklist.

Admitted WWU students continuing from spring 2008 use Web4U and follow the Initial Registration Schedule to register.

Measles Immunization Requirement

All Western students born after January 1, 1957, must show proof of measles immunization prior to registration. If you have not satisfied this requirement or need further information, please contact the Health Services Center at (360) 650-3400 or visit the Student Health Center website.  Print a request form for the "summer only" Measles Waiver [click here].

Registration is Conducted in Three Phases

Phase I (May 6-9) - a period reserved for continuing students and newly matriculated transfer students.  Use Web4U if you were registered spring quarter 2008.  Do not complete a Summer Registration Application Form.
.

Phase II (May 12-June 23) - a period before the start of the quarter when students can change their schedules and when visiting students register.

Phase III (June 24-27) - beginning the first day of the quarter and ending the fourth day.

Students may register through the fourth day of the quarter or prior to the second class meeting for most late-start courses 3-5 weeks in length. Early registration is advised to ensure seat availability and to accommodate courses with enrollment limits. After Phase III, all students register in the Registrar's Office, OM 230.

Register during Phase I if you were enrolled spring quarter and you are a formally-admitted, continuing student at Western. The Phase I schedule lists the initial times you can register based on the total number of credits you have completed (credits for which you have grades). This is your first opportunity to register for summer quarter; however, you can register by using Web4U until 5 p.m. on the fourth day of the quarter (or in person prior to the second class meeting for most late-start courses). To check your credit total, go to Web4U at www.wwu.edu/web4u. Do not complete the Summer Registration Application Form.

Registration Restrictions

Students are responsible for ensuring that they have satisfied all prerequisites and restrictions before registering for a course. Students who register for a course without satisfying prerequisites may be required by the instructor to withdraw from the course.

Due to pedagogical reasons, some courses are restricted to certain levels of students (students who are declared majors or those who have received special permission from the instructor). Restrictions are listed in the online Timetable or in Classfinder and are subject to change at the discretion of the academic departments.

Things to Consider Before Planning Your Schedule

1. Familiarize yourself with the registration information.

2. Academic advising is highly recommended; contact your major department or the Academic Advising Center for assistance, (360) 650-3850. You can receive advising for planning your class schedule by:
  • Making an appointment with your department or the Academic Advising Center.
  • Contacting the department offering the class.
  • Attending the Office of Admissions’ orientation and advising session on June 23 for new summer quarter admitted students.

3. Draft your plan of study before registering. Check your plan for time conflicts as this feature of electronic registration is not available summer quarter. You will need to use the Course Reference Number (CRN) listed on your class schedule to register. CRNs are unique every quarter.

4. Determine if your course has an override restriction. If so, you must obtain the instructor/department’s permission before you register for the class.

Registration Holds

A “hold” is placed on registration for students who have any outstanding obligations to the University. These obligations can include outstanding debts, failure to comply with immunization policies, failure to comply with certain admissions requirements or academic regulations, violations of conduct codes, or other University rules.

If you attempt to register and the system indicates you have a hold on your registration, you must contact the office that placed the hold to make necessary arrangements before you can register for courses. The department name and phone number are listed on each hold. Using Web4U, go to Student Services and Financial Aid, Student Records, View Holds.

Late Registration

The deadline to register or add a class using Web4U is 5 p.m. on the fourth day of the quarter. Beginning the fifth day of the quarter, all registration must be done in person at the Registrar’s Office, Old Main 230. Late registration is permitted only in exceptional cases. After the first four days of the quarter, a student may register for and enter a course only by obtaining permission (override or written) from the course instructor. A late-registration or late-add fee ($10 per credit), may apply unless it is a late-starting course.

Web4U - Internet Student Services System

Your initial Personal Identification Number (PIN) normally consists of the first six digits of your social security number (SSN). If you don’t have an SSN in our system, use your birth date (listed as Month/Day/Year and entered as MM/DD/YY, e.g., 021675). You are encouraged to change your PIN to a customized code for added security.

Some courses are offered for a variable number of credits. When registering on Web4U for a course with variable credit, you will be registered for the minimum number of credits for the course. It is necessary to return to the Registration menu to change the number of credits. Click on Change Variable Credit Hours and enter the correct number of credits. Beginning the second week of the quarter, students must go to the Registrar’s Office to change credits.

If you experience difficulties registering electronically, make note of the point at which the problem occurs and the registration error message you are given. Contact the Registrar’s Office for assistance (360) 650-3432.

If your course lists a “PR” in the online Timetable or in Classfinder, it will be necessary to obtain an independent study permit card from the instructor (graduate students complete online E-sign form).

If your course lists an “OV” in the online Timetable or in Classfinder, it will be necessary to obtain an override clearance from the instructor or the department and then register.

You are responsible for changing your address or telephone number online using Web4U/Personal Information.

If you have a documented physical or learning disability and need academic accommodation, initiate a request for services through Western’s disAbility Resources for Students, (360) 650-3083; TTY (360) 650-3725.

You are responsible for your conduct on the electronic registration systems. Students who tamper or attempt to tamper with the registration records of another student, including but not limited to, dropping or adding courses and improper use of overrides, may be subject to disciplinary action.

Applying for a Bachelor’s Degree and/or Residency Teaching Certificate

Degrees and/or residency teaching certificates are not automatically awarded when requirements are completed. It is the responsibility of the student to make application to the Registrar’s/Certification Office no later than the last day of classes two quarters prior to the final quarter. Complete instructions are online at www.wwu.edu/depts/registrar/degree_application.shtml. Teaching certificate applications are available in the Certification Office in Miller Hall 216.

Institutional Policies and Procedures

The University attempts to make students aware of academic policies through the publication of the Western Bulletin, other printed materials and in advising sessions. However, it is the student’s responsibility to become familiar with those policies and to be aware of any policy changes that may occur. Every effort has been made to provide accurate information regarding policies and procedures. However, these practices may change prior to catalog revision. Contact the Summer Session office at (360) 650-3308 for further information.

Please refer to the Western Bulletin for University policies (select “Index,” then select “C” for Catalog).
