Changing China: Culture, Community, and Citizenship

Explore the challenges facing China – one of the oldest civilizations with the fastest economic growth rate in the world. Travel and study abroad this summer with WWU faculty Dr. Baozhen Luo and Dr. Kristen Parris and other students. You will:
- Gain a global perspective on culture, community, and citizenship
- Using a case study - learn how citizens, families, communities and governments in China respond to its many challenges focusing on one critical area for social policy – population
- Examine population issues in China including culture of son preference, tradition of filial piety, gender ratio, one-child policy, population aging, welfare institutions for disadvantaged population, etc.
- Experience and understand the multifaceted nature of change and continuity in Chinese society today
- Visit historical and cultural sites
