This course is for advanced mushroomers who want to further their appreciation of the world of mushroom-producing fungi.
Learn and practice the common techniques of microscopic examination of mushrooms: examine tissues and spores, use stains, measure microscopic structures, and enhance your microscopic technique.
The general areas covered will include theory and application of correct microscope use, analyzing the structure of tissues in mushrooms, describing and measuring spores and other microscopic structures, and the use of common stains and preparation techniques.
Open to anyone with some previous mushroom identification experience.

Course Details:
Face-to-face contact in 30-minute lecture presentation with remaining 2-hour time devoted to hands on study of material in laboratory setting.
Cost: $85.
Optional: 1-Credit is available in Biology for an additional fee of $50.

Instructor:

Fred M. Rhoades WWU Instructor and Research Associate, Ph.D. University of Oregon, Eugene. Fred's interests are in mycology (including lichenology), cryptogamic botany, botany, mushroom identification, evolutionary diversity. His research includes lichen and mushroom identification and inventories, using lichens as biomonitors of air quality and 3-D photography of cryptogams.

The Biology Building (# 42) is in the south cluster of academic buildings. There is free evening parking in the C lots beginning at 4:30 pm. The best place to park is near the Wade King Recreation Center (#38) and walk up the pathway/ roadway on the east side of the Recreation Center to the Biology Building. There is paid, metered parking and a machine that issues temporary parking stickers in the 17G lot east of the Biology Building, behind Arntzen Hall (#26) and Environmental Studies (#27).
