Western Washington University’s program prepares you to:
  • Mitigate – Plan – Respond – Recover
  • Manage and coordinate disaster response
  • Work with your community in pre- and post-disaster planning
  • Create comprehensive all-hazards emergency plans
Certificate Program Information
Western Washington University’s 24-credit certificate provides the academic background established by the Higher Education Project at the Emergency Management Institute at FEMA as essential for an effective Emergency Manager. Classes are taught online over a 10-week period corresponding to the University’s quarter schedule. Two-three courses are offered each quarter. Because classes are taught asynchronously, attendance is not required on any specific day or time. Participants simply submit assignments by the required dates.

Participants who are called away to handle an emergency will be allowed a grace period in which to complete course work.

Professional Certification
Completion of the program helps qualify certificate holders as Certified Emergency Managers (CEM). Individuals wishing to become CEM’s must possess a bachelor’s degree, have three years’ experience in the field, and sit for an exam administered by the International Association of Emergency Managers (www.iaem.com).
