When do classes start?
Classes are taught online over a 10-week period corresponding to the University’s quarter schedule. Two or three courses are offered each quarter. Because classes are taught asynchronously, attendance is not required on any specific day or time. Simply submit assignments during the quarter you have registered for [click here to view the WWU Quarterly Registration Schedule for start and end dates].

Do I have to come to Bellingham?
There are no face to face sessions held in Bellingham, Washington or any place else. Of course if you happen to be in Bellingham we’d love to meet you and buy you a cup of coffee! Starbuck’s of course – after all this is the Pacific Northwest!!!

How much time will the class require each week?
It is anticipated you will spend three to four hours each week engaged in learning the materials for every credit registered. For example, in a 3 credit class you can anticipate 9 to 12 hours each week. This is an average and everyone will experience more or less depending on their personal learning style.

Can I transfer these credits to another institution?
Western Washington University is a regionally accredited institution of higher education. Many students who enroll in the Emergency Management Certificate program use the certificate courses to fulfill undergraduate graduation requirements at their home institution. The receiving institution of transfer credits has the right to review the curriculum to determine the equivalency to courses they offer. It is advised that if you are currently enrolled in another institution you receive permission from your advisor prior to enrolling in any class offered by a different institution. The official course description as well as a syllabus will be supplied to assist you in this process.

When I complete the certificate does that give me the status of Certified Emergency Manager?
No. The professional certification of Certified Emergency Manager (CEM) is issued by the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM). The curriculum in the certificate program at WWU provides you with the academic skills, knowledge and abilities necessary to sit for the exam. Visit the IAEM website for complete information at http://www.iaem.com
