The Stimpson Family papers exhibited no original order at the time of the donation. The staff of the Center for Pacific Northwest Studies developed the following arrangement scheme to render the materials useful for research purposes. The records were organized into series based on the record’s creator and then by function and format of material.

Series I consists of material created by Edward K. and Catharine C. "Kitty" (Watts) Stimpson and other immediate family members. Series II and III includes  materials generated specifically by Edward and Kitty, particularly before they were married and materials related to their public lives. Series IV, V, and VI relate to the records generated by individual children in the Stimpson family that were still in the family home following Kitty's death. Series VII and VIII relate to material generated by the maternal and paternal lines of Edward and Kitty's family.

NOTE:  The following research and publication restrictions apply to the collection at the request of the donors. 

1. The pre-1945 material is open to qualified researchers.  

2. The post-1945 material is closed until  January 2012.

3. All material about Arthur and Margaret Watts remains closed until their deaths.

4. All researchers must obtain permission from the family donor committee to quote from any of the materials until 2022.

5. Access to the collection is limited to qualified researchers for the purpose of scholarship.  Access to the collection for non-academic research must be approved by a committee of donors. 

The material that appears in red is fully restricted until 2012. If the box title or series title appears in red ALL of the material in the box or series is restricted.
