The Center for Pacific Northwest
Studies Miscellaneous Scrapbook Collection comprises a variety
of
scrapbooks spanning the period 1862-1967, with the bulk of
material dated from 1900-1967. Although the majority of
scrapbooks were apparently compiled by individuals and families for their
personal interest and use, the collection includes a small
number that document the activities and holdings of organizations.
The photographic scrapbooks document the family life of
ordinary individuals and families and some of their travels.
These scrapbooks also include images of scenery and landmarks in the Pacific Northwest
such as Lake Whatcom, Mount Baker and the Mount Baker Lodge, the
Penitentiary on McNeil Island, Point Defiance Park, and Grouse
Mountain. The collection also includes scrapbooks documenting fishing boats, passenger
ships, battleships from WWI and WWII and
Pacific American Fisheries facilities in Alaska and in
Bellingham. It is possible that some of the images were
taken or collected by Bert Huntoon and Galen Biery.
The remaining, non-photographic scrapbooks primarily contain newspaper clippings and
cards. Much of the subject matters relates to the history and
growth of the Pacific Northwest and in particular Whatcom County
and the cities of
Bellingham and Lynden. These scrapbooks contain
biographical information about well-known local individuals and
families including Ella Higginson, Phoebe Judson,
and the
Eldridge, Morse and Roeder families. The scrapbooks also
document the history of Bellingham and Washington landmarks
such as the old City Hall, George Pickett's House, St Joseph's
Hospital, the Equality Colony, and the Washington Territorial
capitol. There are also scrapbooks from individuals such as
Bellingham attorney Thomas G. Newman. Some scrapbooks contain
collections of poetry and lyrics that had been printed in
newspapers.
Other subjects include local politics, WWI, John F. Kennedy's
assassination, fraternal
organizations such as the Odd Fellows and the Improved Order of
Red Men, Beck's Theater, and musical performances from the
Washington State Normal School at Bellingham (present-day
Western Washington University) and the Bellingham Woman's Music
Club.
Additional records pertaining
to the Bellingham Woman's Music Club can be found in the Center
for Pacific Northwest Studies' Bellingham Woman's Music Club
Records.
