The
Wallie V. Funk papers document the personal and
professional life of the Pacific Northwest journalist and
photographer, Wallie V. Funk.
The collection includes photographs, negatives, proof sheets,
and mock-ups created by Funk from 1950-1989, during his tenure
as co-owner and managing editor of the Anacortes American, the
Whidbey News-Times, and the South Whidbey Record. The bulk
of the collection reflects Funk's professional career and his
civic involvement.
The photographs and negatives comprise images of people, places,
political and community events, and the natural and urban
environment of Whidbey Island, Skagit County, and Island County
in Washington State. During his career he also reported on
national news and events, and included among his photographs are
images of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and Presidents
Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, and Reagan. Funk's
papers and photographs also document his travels with the
Washington State trade missions to China, the Middle East,
and Thailand in the 1980s as well as several trips to Europe.
The collection also contains textual materials, including
newspaper articles and Funk's editorials which enhance the
photographic materials. Civic events and organizations
documented in the collection by photographs and textual
materials include the Navy League, Whidbey Playhouse, the
Washington Newspaper Publisher's Association, the Washington
Arts Commission, and Whidbey Island Naval Air Station.
