Instructions For Teachers:

This website gives teachers and students an opportunity in conjunction with the 2003-04 celebration of the Bellingham Centennial to examine primary sources related to the history of Bellingham.

Drawn from the archives of WWU's Center for Pacific Northwest Studies, these primary sources include photographs, maps, and documents that provide a firsthand sense of life in Bellingham a century ago.

The website presents these materials in four sections: Towns; Industries; People; and Schools. Each section features several subtopics, with a short text narrative providing an informational overview of each subtopic. Teachers may want to use the website for putting together materials for use by students in class; alternatively, teachers may want the students themselves to explore the website, and put together their own materials.

The Lesson Frameworks section offers teachers a variety of possible curricular elements for planning a Bellingham Centennial unit. The frameworks are geared toward the elementary-school, middle-school and, the high-school levels. While the frameworks have been presented in sets, each framework could also function very well on its own. Suggested time frames are given for each framework. Teachers are therefore able to plan a Bellingham Centennial unit that could last anywhere from two days to two weeks.

The Additional Activities section gives teachers, students, and families information about local events and exhibits happening in relation to the Bellingham Centennial.

The Educational Resources section provides a bibliography as well as lists of primary-sources related to Bellingham's history. This section could be particularly helpful for high-school research projects.
