The American
Federation of Teachers (AFT), Local 2084 records date from 1970 to
1985, and consist of program materials, membership records,
and publications generated by faculty at Western Washington State College (now
Western Washington University) in
Bellingham, Washington. The collection documents the advocacy
efforts of the AFT Local 2084 during the 1970s and 1980s, which included fighting
salary reductions, preventing faculty lay-offs, and pursuing
enabling legislation for collective bargaining at four-year
institutions of higher learning. These issues were prevalent
among other colleges and universities throughout the state of
Washington at the same time.
Program materials contain records generated by AFT Local 2084's board
members,
as well as correspondence, draft proposals, notices, bulletins, and
memoranda. The collection also contains membership lists and recruitment instructions.
Publications include an incomplete set of the Western Union, the
publication of the AFT Local 2084, as well as cartoons by members. There are also some newspaper
clippings about union-related activities at Western Washington
University
as well as in colleges and universities throughout the state of
Washington.
