This happens each time a student logs in to any computer on campus. If you are not currently enrolled in a Huxley or Geology course, but need access to the J:\ drive you can talk to Dave Knutson. for custom access permission. In this case, you will need to either manually map (assign) the J:\ drive from a computer or edit your login script which will then automatically map it for you each time you logon. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
The S:\ drive is a WWU Server ('CLASS1' on the 'WUF' server) with dedicated space for student classes and/or projects. Huxley has a subfolder on the S:\ drive that is available to students for collaborative class projects (See Stefan for details on setting up a folder). Access to these folders is typically tied to a particular class registration. This means that at the end of the quarter you will no longer be able to see/access most folders on the S:\ drive! Once you have permission to an S:\ drive folder (typically by being enrolled in a class), you should have the S:\ drive (and your folder) automatically mapped (assigned) to the letter 'S' each time you logon to a WWU computer. If for some reason you don't get the S:\ drive, you will need to Map (assign) it to the letter 'S' either manually, or by editing your login script. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Often, having been assigned permission to access a Huxley or WWU server will also causes the server to be automatically mapped when you logon to a computer on campus.. If not, you will need to either manually map the drive, or edit your login script to automatically map it each time you login. This is true for the J:\ drive and the S:\ drive and other servers on campus. In all cases, you can only map to a drive if you already also have permission to access is. To get permission for a specific server (drive) see Dave Knutson (for the J:\ or S:\ drive) or Stefan Freelan (for the S:\ drive). Assuming that you have permission to access a server, there are two methods to map it: 1. Manually add it to the computer's list of drive letters each time you log in to a computer. 2. Add a line to your Novel Login Script that will map the drive for you each time you log in. Details on both of these methods are included below. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ This method will have to be repeated each time you logon to a new computer...
Open Windows Explorer (or My Computer) From the Tools menu, choose Map Network Drive... In the Drive: text box, choose the appropriate letter from the drop down menu (i.e., J or S - or whatever letter you prefer) In the Folder: text box, enter the appropriate path/name for the drive you wish to access
For SALdata: Drive: J Folder: \\ptarmigan\data1
For the S:\ Drive: Drive: S Folder: \\Wuf-class1\class1
If you have an account on the computer you are using, you can click the check-box next to Reconnect at logon. This will tell the computer to remember this mapped drive assignment - but this only works for the computer you are on if you have an account on that computer (student accounts are dynamic, stored by a WWU server as opposed to stored on the individual computers in the lab, etc.). ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ EDITING YOUR Novel Login Script: By editing your Novel Login Script, you can automate the process of mapping a drive assignment each time you logon to a WWU computer.
From the tool tray, right-click the red N (the Novel icon) (bottom of the screen, right hand section of the tool bar) Choose User Administration for WWU Choose Edit Login Script In the Edit Login Script dialog box, type the following code:
For SALdata:
write "" map root J:=.ptarmigan_data1.huxley.wwu
OR (if the above script doesn't work, try...)
write "" map root J:= \\ptarmigan\data1
For the S:\ Drive:
write "" map root s:=\\WUF-CLASS1\CLASS1
OR (if for some reason that doesn't work, try:)
write ""
Example of mapping more than one Drive (if you need access to multiple drives):
write "" map root J:=ptarmigan\data1 map root S:=duey\data1

Likewise, ArcGIS may not be able to access your CD and/or DVD drives by default. To connect to these drives you need to first make sure the drive is mapped (check in Windows Explorer or My Computer to verify that the drive is properly mapped and available) and then "Connect to Folder" in ArcGIS.
